UCC Firsts

Dr. Robin Meyers, Senior Minister of Mayflower Congregational, UCC in Oklahoma City; Reverend Kathy McAllie, Senior Minister of Church of the Open Arms, UCC—also in Oklahoma City; along with the leadership of the Kansas-Oklahoma Conference of the United Church of Christ, have united, calling themselves “Friends of Norman,” and, together share the vision of creating a United Church of Christ congregation in Norman.

At a time when evangelical-conservative Christians dominate the religious and cultural landscape of our country, and, indeed, the state of Oklahoma—Friends of Norman feel that it’s imperative to provide, progressive-minded Christians—who want more than just blind faith, with a second opinion on Christianity.

Due to the both unexpected, and, overwhelming notoriety that Dr. Meyers and his progressive message received, as a result of his speech heard round the world, which was given at the United Ministry Center in Norman, in November of 2004, Dr. Meyers and Friends of Norman feel compelled to establish a UCC Church, in a city such as Norman, which historically has been a bastion for progressive-minded people with deep concerns for social problems and issues of social justice.
